Building Science

Building Science

Building Science is the scientific study of the design, construction, and maintenance of buildings. It encompasses a wide range of topics from thermal performance of building materials to room acoustics. Our building science team focuses on how heat, air, water, and moisture moves throughout a building. We can incorporate building sciences into new builds and renovation projects, as well as visit your property to provide an assessment of issues you have found and want to rectify.

We work closely with AcoustiGuard to provide clients with design solutions for interior room acoustics for privacy or sound control. From boardrooms to personal home theatres, we focus on acoustic comfort for everyone.

  1. Acoustics assessment and consultation
  2. Research on product availability
  3. Product recommendation
  4. Drawings for product integration into the design

Enery Use and Conservation

Energy use plays a large role in a building owner’s monthly costs. Ensuring low energy losses through walls and around windows, as well as efficient heating and cooling equipment will help aid in conserving energy.

  1. Thermal analysis to determine where heat loss and gain are occurring
  2. Wall assembly and window design to reduce energy loss
  3. Indoor air temperature and flow analysis to determine heating, ventilation, and air conditioning requirements
  4. Equipment and system recommendations to aid in energy conservation
  5. Recommendation and integration of alternative energy solutions

Building Envelope

The building envelope separates the indoor environment from the outdoor environment. It is responsible for ensuring that the indoor environment remains comfortable and protected against damage. The exterior walls, windows, doors, as well as the foundation and roof make up the building envelope.

  1. Building envelope design
  2. Wall assembly rating calculations and design optimization
  3. Official design drawings for building permit application
  4. Building envelope assessment for maintenance and repair recommendation
  5. Design detailing for rainwater management
  6. Ventilation and air conditioning to control indoor air humidity
  7. Building envelope design to prevent moisture accumulation in the wall assembly
  8. Building assessments to determine the potential causes of issues and create a remediation plan

Sustainability is about finding a way to meet today’s needs without compromising our planet’s natural resources and depriving future generations. Sustainable development can be as complex as designing and building a new passive house, but it can also be as simple as making smart design or material choices that reduce energy loss from your home which in turn reduces how much energy is required to heat or cool the building.

  1. Research and recommendations for sustainable and durable material choices
  2. Sustainable building design consultation
  3. Design drawings detailing material selection or building design
